MLK day FUN!

The snow has been on the ground for a few days, and the boys have been out in it just about every day. Today's the first day it even dawned on me to capture some of their fun. Here's some glimpses of our new neighborhood and house as well.

There is a ramp off the back door. Chris and I had intentions to remove it but the boys seem to be having too much fun with it. They ride their bikes on it in the summer and sled down it in the winter. Good times!

Yesterday, Andrew and Chris decided to dress alike. Drew is so proud of his dad! I recently read on his "All About Me" poster that someday he would like to be a youth pastor (just like his dad.)

2011: The Year in Review

Our family had a lot of changes in 2011. We said good-bye to our temporary housing situation, bought and moved into our current home, dealt with crazy 'Money Pit' issues, grieved the loss our dog of 13 years, and welcomed a new puppy into our home. We also celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, and other holidays. We were very, very blessed in 2011. I'm thankful for my family's love, health, and safety.

Chris and my dad coached both boys on the same team in 2011. It's a very low key league, not anything like we were in before. The boys seemed to enjoy themselves.

Chris performed a wedding ceremony in September for a friend in Marysville. His wife is beautiful and they are extremely happy. So excited that they included us on their special day!

Jonathan's braces came off this fall. He was so excited to be able to chew gum again. He's only lost his retainer once as of this posting...

The Best Football Game EVER

My dad played football with the boys one afternoon this fall, and they all had an incredible time. I wasn't home for most of the game, but my sister was generous enough to snap some pictures.

Star of the Week

Each student in Drew's class has an opportunity to be the Star of the Week at some point during the school year. The Star of the Week gets to bring in a decorated poster, share snacks, and is given other fun privileges.

Drew brought in snacks almost every day, brought in his favorite stuffed animals, and basically just enjoyed all the extra attention showered on him. I am certain he was sad when his week was over.

Don't worry Drew, you're always a star in my book...

Halloween Happenings

This year, after much deliberation, the boys both decided to be military police officers. Like every year, the boys had school parties the Friday before Halloween. It's become a tradition to take them out to eat that day as well, and this year we went to Pancho's.

On Halloween, we headed to Chris's sister's house to trick-or-treat with her family. We were assured that we would not encounter any shenanigans like in Alliance, so I reluctantly agreed to go. Once there, I knew we had been fooled. By the end, Chris and I vowed to never go trick-or-treating ANYWHERE ever again. We'll take the boys somewhere special (we're thinking an indoor water park, if anyone else is interested in accompanying us...) but we refuse to participate in the traditional trick-or-treat experience. What made us make such a hasty decision, you ask? Well, how about a man dressed in a scary clown suit chasing children with a chain saw? Oh yeah. I honestly believed that Chris was going to have to get into a fist fight with the guy because he was coming toward us. Lucky for the clown, he turned around. I would have had no problem cheering Chris on as he beat up that clown. Jerk. Don't mess with my boys!

Chris hosted a high school costume party at church and invited us this year. Unfortunately, that meant that I needed a costume. Here's what my sister came up with... The boys had a great time! They love hanging out with the 'big kids.'

Pumpkin Faces

Andrea helped the boys carve pumpkins this year, and I believe that this is the second year in a row that I (unfortunately) had to miss out on the mess! Hee hee.

Saying Goodbye

We finally sold our home this past fall. As we were packing, we snapped some pictures to help us remember the ordeal. We are currently in our temporary housing situation at my sister's, but are hopeful that we'll be in a new home this summer.

We all had our weepy moments while saying goodbye to the home we lived in for five years. It's been three and a half months now, and we're doing OK. It's hard to see someone else living in our house, and I get mad when I see them doing new things to it. The worst was when I drove by and saw they had tore the fence apart to get a bobcat inside the yard to tear out all the shrubbery. I'm getting mad just thinking about it, so I might as well just post. Grr.

1st Day of School 2010/2011

They boys were pretty excited about the first day of school this year. Unfortunately, since I have to leave before they do, I didn't get to experience any of their enthusiasm. Thankfully, Chris was willing to snap some pictures for me!

Jonathan is in 2nd grade, and Drew is in 1st grade. With the year half over, both boys have had a wonderful year. They are enjoying school for the most part, but they still do enjoy their snow days!

Drew's First Lost Tooth

Andrew finally lost his first tooth this past summer. He was so proud! To date, he has only lost two. His two top front teeth are loose, but I'm afraid we have a while before they come out.

Vacation

The four of us headed to the Outer Banks this past summer. It marked the first 'real' vacation for our family. We enjoyed a week at the beach and were able to relax and spend quality time together.

Baseball

Andrew played t-ball last season. He enjoyed playing the whole field, no matter which position he was assigned. Jonathan played coach pitch, and was normally assigned left-center. I saw tremendous improvement from both boys and we are anxiously awaiting another season of baseball. We'll start hitting the batting cages soon...

Bike Riding

Last spring was the first that Drew was willing to try riding a two-wheel bike. Thinking it would be easier for him, we took the boys to a parking lot to practice a few times. Now days, both boys zoom up and down the sidewalk like crazy men!

End of the School Year Programs

In 2010, both boys had special end of the year programs. Jonathan had an awards ceremony and Andrew had kindergarten graduation. I am so proud of both of them!

Easter 2010

We celebrated Easter by giving the boys their baskets before church, then heading to church. Afterward, we went to my parents' house to have an egg hunt and eat lunch.

Really?

My parents saw me taking pictures of their magnolia bush and ended up giving me one of my own on Mother's Day. Unfortunately, we ended up selling our house and not digging up the tree. Dad said they'd get me another one. Hope so!

After my parents' house, we headed to Chris's mom's house for dinner. For some reason the boys thought it would be a good idea to climb one of her trees. Drew ended up getting stuck and Chris had to help him down. For some reason most everyone was laughing. I was NOT.

This last picture is of Kathy's weeping cherry tree. I tried to get the camera to focus on the bumble bee but no such luck. UH!

The Nature Center

Rollerskating

Our church hosted a family rollerskating party last year. Since the boys have enjoyed skating so much in the past, we though we would try it out again. Drew refused to even put on skates, so Jonathan and Chris were the only ones brave enough get on the rink. Jonathan even had the courage to skate with a girl during a couple's skate.

I'm pretty sure Marci asked Jonathan. Silly girls...always after my boys!

Basketball Clinic

Last year we decided to enroll the boys in our church's basketball clinic. I don't think they hated it, but I don't think that basketball is our thing either. I can't wait for baseball!

Student of the Month

Andrew was selected to attend a Student of the Month dinner last February.

Just between the two of us, I believe every student is selected during the year to be a student of the month... We wouldn't want anyone to feel left out, would we?

Maybe I should have titled this post 'The Celebration of Mediocracy.' Heaven forbid we only reward the hard working students that actually deserve the recognition.

None the less, we were proud to sit beside Drew and watch as he accepted his award.

Mrs. Bowser decided it would be a good idea to allow Drew to put a tattoo on his forehead for the dinner. He was so proud of it!

Andrew was allowed to sit by his bestest friend in kindergarten, Allen, during the dinner. Unfortunately, the boys weren't able to attend the same school after kindergarten. I hope Allen is having a great 1st grade year!

Amish Country

Thanks to a friend's generous gift certificate, Chris and I took the boys to Amish Country for a mini-vacation last February. The highlight of the trip was the pool. The food was awesome too!

For Jonathan's first real book report, we decided to make an interactive, online poster board using Glogster instead of a normal poster board. Certainly he needed a lot of help, but I thought it was important to expose him to current technology. He loved it!

Best Friends

My boys are best friends. I wouldn't have it any other way. I wanted to share this picture to show you that when given the choice, they sit right next to each other. They share a room and like their beds pushed together too. I hope that as they grow their love and loyalty will continue to grow as well.

Jonathan's school put on a choir concert shortly before Christmas break this year. I forgot to include it so I'm having to backtrack a bit. Out of all the first graders, he was asked to read a poem about HANUKKAH!!! Can you believe it?

My Jonathan

Every day I am thankful for my boys. They are both amazing! I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to be their mother.

My Andrew is confident, daring, and silly. He also has a tender side that peeks through.

My Jonathan is intelligent, intuitive, and strong. Sure, he believes he's he strongest and fastest boy ever, but I'm talking about a different kind of strong.

My Jonathan has had to use an inhaler for his asthma for many years. Every night he takes two puffs. He also struggles with itchy skin. Tonight, while scratching his back, I saw little red bumps. Itchy bumps. Poor guy! Because of these two things, my heart already aches for him. But recently, my aching heart has hurt a little more. I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you what he's been dealing with lately.

Jonathan has always had a cross bite and an under bite. This summer, we decided to trust the doctor and have an appliance put in his mouth. It is cemented onto his upper molars on both sides. The cemented portions are attached by a metal expander that we have to crank every night. Just today he added head gear to the contraption. Thankfully, he does not have to wear the head gear in public, but it is recommended that he wear it for 12 - 14 hours each night.

Besides some discomfort voiced after each crank, my Jonathan does not complain about his appliance or head gear. His speech is slurred, food gets trapped, he can't eat certain things, he drools more, it's hard for him to control how much food gets on his face, and his sleeping patterns are changed. He does not complain about these inconveniences. He has such a positive outlook. He knows that his current situation is temporary and that he's enduring it for the awesome results.

I have cried while watching him sleep. While hearing him talk. While watching him eat. I fear for what he will have to face once school starts again. But my Jonathan is strong. He only focuses on the positive. I admire him. I am so proud of him.

Jonathan's Field Trip to MUC Nature Center and Butterfly Garden

Jonathan's class headed to the MUC Nature Center and the Beech Creek Butterfly Garden for one of their first field trips of the year. You can be certain that I had someone (my mom) accompany him. Truth be told, someone accompanied both of my boys on each field trip this year. NICE!!!

After each field trip the kids get to play on the playground for a while.

Friends, Food, and Swine Flu

We headed down to visit the Trasks around Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, it was a super short trip. Jonathan started getting sick our first night there and we ended up going home the next day after brunch. I'm pretty sure he had Swine Flu. So...I'm not sure Becki will ever invite us down again...

Although it was short, I really enjoyed spending time with Becki. I miss her so much...

We had a mini celebration for Chris's sister's birthday this year. Chris tried to find a tasty cake and had it decorated... This is what we ended up with.

Notice the Happy Birthday in a sort of rainbow frosting (that is if you consider rainbow yellow, orange, and green.) Also notice Beth? It's harder to see. Find the black frosting on the right hand side and you have to squint to make out 'Beth.' Nice.

In addition to being ugly, the cake was freezer burnt and inedible.

Poor Beth. Not sure anyone has had a worse birthday cake. Poor Chris. He sure did pick the wrong cake! We thought about submitting this to Cake Wrecks but I couldn't get it to load. Hmm. Maybe I'll try again!

Happy Halloween 2009

Jonathan chose to be Megatron and Drew chose to be Wolverine this year for Halloween. Both boys had school parties at the same time so Chris and I both took off work, took the boys out to lunch (to change into their costumes,) then Chris went with Jonathan and I went with Drew. I thought for sure I sent a camera with Chris but maybe I was wrong. If I find them, I'll post them later.

While I was with Drew I took the opportunity to photograph some of his 'works of art.'

Trick or Treat is always interesting in Alliance. Not in a good way, either. After I witnessed a 50+ year old man say 'trick or treat' to my husband and hold out a Wal-mart bag (without a costume) I vowed that my children would never again trick or treat in Alliance. Ever. We ran inside, closed the curtains, and checked their candy for foul play. Once beggar's night was over we headed out to eat with Chris's mom and stepfather. Good times.

Chris started his Masters work this past year. He's going for his Master's of Divinity through George Fox University in Portland, Oregon. He travels to campus twice a year then does the rest of the work online. Four years from now we're all planning on flying to Portland to watch him graduate.

It's hard on us when he's in Portland (see my earlier post...) but I know that the sacrifice will be worth it in the end. I believe the boys are working on Welcome Home signs for Chris in this picture. It also looks like I had recently steam vac-ed the carpet. Notice the large hose on the table...

Chris likes surprising the boys with something small when he comes home. This time it was the new Skippy John Jones book: Lost in Spice. We love that book series, so we were super excited to read the newest one...

MUC Nature Center and Drew's Class

Drew's kindergarten teacher is amazing!!! She was also Jonathan's teacher. She recently invited Jonathan and two other former students (Jade S. and McKenzie F.) to dinner. They decided to wear red shirts for the big night, and I let Jonathan bring the camera to capture all of the special moments. Here's some of what he brought home.

It's Official...The Blog is BACK!

Yes, it's been almost a year since I've posted anything. I apologize. I'm still learning how to juggle working full time with doing everything I did while staying home... I'll let you know when I figure it out.

The 2nd Annual Dog Show

Our church hosted 2nd Annual Dog Show a few weeks after school started and we decided to enter Greta in the 'Waggliest Tail' competition (she lost...)

The church goes all out for all of their community events and this was no different. There was a vendor for 'fair food', a K-9 unit, and a local radio personality hosted the event.

The highlight of the afternoon was Chris being attacked by the police dog. He volunteered. Can you imagine?

First Days 2009/2010 School Year

Jonathan started school on August 24th this year. My first day was also that day, but mine was a work day. My kids came Tuesday. Drew started on Thursday the 27th. We all had a fabulous first week, although I am exhausted!

Both the boys seem happy with their teachers and are learning the ins and outs of their new classes.

I have around a million students but I am loving it! OK, maybe just around 135 but still...

My days go super fast and I haven't had a whole lot of discipline problems. My only complaint is that by the end of the day my feet kill and I am exhausted.

Going to bed early is the new cool thing to do at the King home. When the alarm goes off at 5am I just keep telling myself that the early bird gets the worm.

I am so grateful that I have a job. I'm also grateful that the boys have GREAT teachers!

Family Style Corn

This post is purely for Chris's enjoyment. OK, I guess you'll find it humorous as well. We have been getting lots of veggies from his mom and step dad's garden lately. The newest batch included yummy sweet corn.

Chris was kind enough to cook the dinner when we had the corn. Grilled chicken sandwiches, corn on the cob, and chips. Mmm. What a great meal! I wasn't home when he shucked the corn, but he saved me this amusing find...

The Last Day of Summer Vacation

Today marks the last day of summer vacation. We went to church, ate at Friendly's, came home, I went to Wal-mart, then we had Papa John's for dinner. I know what you're thinking...does the girl
EVER cook? Well...yes...just not today...

ANYWAY

I think the boys enjoyed themselves today. They partook in some trampoline action, Lego action, and other awesome adventures.

Drew is not happy because we just told him he was not allowed to go to my parents' house.

Chris told us that if he were ever on Death Row (...OK...) he would request the meal he ate. Some sort of cheeseburger and fries. And a sundae. And a vanilla Coke.

BACKPACKS

I told them to smile for real this time. Notice Drew's glasses? Check it out...he's been wearing them all day. Actually all week. Maybe longer. They are his Cyclops something something goggles. I can't remember exactly what he calls them but I'll come back and update when I ask him. Notice the color.

Chris and I decided to spend a little more on backpacks this year in hopes that they will last longer than any previous backpacks we've purchased. The boys chose their own colors and have matching lunch sacks too. Nice! Drew's color of choice was orange...his favorite color as of late. Notice the flip flops? Jonathan chose blue. I'm not sure if this is his current favorite color or if it just called to him.

BEDTIME

Andrea and I un-bunked the boys' beds a few weeks ago. The change was a direct result of Drew not sleeping well for a few nights in a row. He complained of being scared and hot. It was our hope that un-bunking the beds would kill two birds with one stone.
The boys love the new look of their bedroom, and I think they like being side by side. Drew no longer complaines about being hot but he still struggles with being scared. Poor kid! Breaks my heart.

Just a few minutes ago I had to go up and tell them to go to sleep AGAIN! Jonathan said he was trying but just couldn't. He then asked if I would sing him 'the song' that I sang to Drew a few nights ago when he was scared. Melt my heart! How could I not? After Jonathan's turn was over, Drew requested 'the song' as well. They both held me tight as I sang and had genuine smiles on their faces. I think I hope it will become a nightly routine. The song is from the movie The Sound of Music...see if you recognize it...

Introspection

Well, today marks the last Friday night before school. We had a picnic in our backyard, the boys jumped on the trampoline, and then we roasted marshmallows. Once inside the boys read books and we enjoyed one another's company. It was an awesome way to end the summer. Tomorrow we're going to look at houses and Sunday we'll head to church.

Monday morning both Jonathan and I start school. I'll be teaching full time (high school math) and Jonathan will be attending first grade. Drew's kindergarten orientation is Monday afternoon and he will start school (full days) on Thursday. Chris starts his master's program after Labor Day.

I'm feeling extremely grateful this evening. I have been blessed with a wonderful husband and incredible boys. God has continually provided for us, and I am excited to see what He has in store for us this year. Because of our schedules it might be a bit crazy, and we have a lot of work ahead of us with the imminent move, but God knows what we can handle.

Dear friends, be thankful for what you have. Don't waste your days complaining and fighting. Be slow to speak and quick to listen. Life is too short. Hug and kiss your kids one more time today, they'll be grown and gone before you know it.

But for now, I just wanted to post what was on my heart.

Although I am feeling warm and fuzzy right now, I know that there is pain and suffering all around. My heart breaks for friends and loved ones whose worlds seem to be falling apart. I am praying for you. I wish I could make it all go away. I serve a big God and trust that He will carry you through. May you find peace in the One who loves you more than you can imagine.

It's a Lego Birthday Jonathan King!

Jonathan really enjoys building Legos. Because of this, we decided to have a Lego themed birthday for him this year.

Andrea made two AWESOME Lego men cakes (Jonathan's request: Darth Maul and Obi-Wan Kenobi.)

We had a small family party for Jonathan the Saturday before his birthday. Cake, ice cream, and presents. Nice.

Jonathan's birthday wish list consisted of only Legos, which gave Chris the idea that our family needed to travel to the nearest Lego Store (which happens to be in Cincinnati) to purchase our presents for him. We loaded up the afternoon before his birthday (last Sunday) and set out. We stayed the night in Blue Ash and headed to Kenwood Place the next morning.

Kenwood Towne Centre is an incredible mall. Lots of high end stores, including The Cheesecake Factory (yum!) The mall opened at 10am but we arrived a bit early. Once we found the Lego Store the boys were drooling over the window displays. Although the store was not as big as I thought it could be, when the doors opened we were all drooling. We had so much fun shopping and in the end, all ended up getting something.

With a successful trip to the Lego Store under our belts we headed to Dayton to visit the Air Force Museum. Chris conned us into stopping at Skyline Chili for lunch (Um Hello???!!! What about the Cheesecake Factory???) He even made me use my GPS. We drove two miles out of our way...Unbelievable!

The Air Force Museum is amazing. So much history. I highly recommend making the trip.

I'm pretty sure these are actual pieces from the Berlin Wall.

We were all pretty pooped after the museum and the trek home was prolonged by our stop at Tuttle Crossing to eat dinner at McDonald's (Jonathan's request...how could we deny him on his birthday???)

Hall of Fame Parade take 1,000,000

OK, so I've been a pretty good sport about the Hall of Fame parade in past years but a girl can only handle so much. I've been to the Hall of Fame parade for many years now and I can pretty much tell you what we are going to see. I can also tell you the environment we'll experience while watching the parade.

Chris loves the parade. He took the boys at 5:30am this year to save us seats. I'm not slighting his efforts and I love him oodles but I'm pretty sure I've sat through my last parade.

The boys love these 'Big Heads' but I'm not sure what they're all about. They were in the parade last year too. Hmm...

Blake Robert

Chris's youngest sister had her first baby last week. He is AWESOME! He weighed 5lbs 14 ozs. He was 18.5 inches long. I can't imagine having such a small baby.

I am told that Megan did fabulous and they are all home and doing very well. I've been able to visit them a few times and love every minute of holding that tiny baby.

Re-Creating Star Wars

One of the boys' favorite movies right now is Star Wars Episode II. They love to re-create the arena battle scenes with their toys. I find it amazing that they pause the movie and bring down every character depicted on film in order to adequately portray the scene.

I decided to document their latest creations on film. I've included a video at the end that was supposed to be Jonathan re-creating the scenes as they play out on screen but as you will see the lighting was bad. Maybe next time.

Yes, in some of the pictures you DO see the couch bed mattress exposed. Another favorite past-time of the boys is to 'pull the couch bed out' and watch movies on it (or play...) This past weekend, Jonathan and Drew were invited to a friend's birthday party. Jade is Jonathan's best buddy from kindergarten and was kind enough to invite Drew to his party as well. The boys had a great time, and Jade's family and friends made us all feel very welcome.

The boys and I headed to Columbus last week to visit with our friends. As always, we had a great time and I was SUPER SAD to leave. You'll see from the pictures that we traveled to Cosi and the Marysville pool but we also got to do some other super fun things!

Swim Lessons Take Two

I have yet to buy a membership to our neighborhood pool. Last year it was nice having a place to go to cool off but sometimes it was so crowded! The pool was a little cold last year too. And crowded. And cold.

But, even though I think I'm going to be able to get through this summer without a pool pass, I could not get through the summer without swim lessons for the boys. Since the June session was so cold last year I opted for the July session...which clearly has been so much warmer...

Jonathan graduated last year to Level II but poor Drew had to be put back into Level I. Both boys are doing well in their respective classes, although I'm a little concerned Drew won't be promoted again. He'll be 16 before he learns how to swim...

Drew's intimidation could come from the fact that he has nearly drowned multiple times. Poor kid! I say that lightly but I hope you all know how truly thankful I am that he has been saved each time. Don't even want to think about that anymore.

$25 for six lessons this year ($20 for six lessons if I would have bought a membership) and $20 for nine lessons last year (that includes our member discount.)

So, roughly, that figures out to $4.17 per lesson this year ($3.33 with a membership) and $2.22 per lesson last year. Even if I would not have bought a membership last year, I still only would have paid $2.77 per lesson.

Just a quick update...

Swim lessons are now over and, unfortunately, neither Jonathan nor Drew passed their respective classes. Drew improved immensely from last season but was still at only 50%. Jonathan had more than 50% of the requirements mastered yet lacked enough to promote him to Level III.

AUGH!!!

Maybe we'll have to sign up for the August session as well.

July 4th and Nothing To Do

OK, we had some options but we wanted to spend time as a family. We didn't even go to the fireworks this year.

Actually, I'm surprised we chose to skip the awesomeness of it all...large obnoxious crowds, cigarette smoke, OTHER smoke, mosquitoes, young children screaming, idle threats of said children's parents, etc.

I love people.

Actually, I love my family! Back to them...

So, Chris did some yard work then (four hours later when he was finished) we decided to go get something to eat. Mmm. Quaker Steak. BONELESS WINGS AND RIBS... Mmm... Then we hit Coldstone...FOUNDER'S FAVORITE...

After stuffing our faces we headed home to jump on the trampoline, light sparklers, and catch fireflies (lightening bugs...whatever...) Great times...except for those darn mosquitoes.

The boys were in bed before the grand finale at the park and Chris and I were settled on the couch watching one of the X-Men movies. I think it was the last one. Where (spoiler alert) Wolverine kills Jean Grey. Gray. However you spell it. "I love you...slash slash slash..." Then lots of weeping. On screen, not on the couch. Anyway...

One of the best Independence Days ever. We chose to be independent. Nice.

You'll be happy to know that as of this posting, Chris will be home tomorrow. It's been a fun week but we're ready to claim him as our own once again.
