Valentine's Day 2009

Yes, we celebrate Valentine's Day. I see it as an excuse to eat chocolate and go out to eat.

I had my dinner reservations request on the calendar almost a month ahead of time, and Chris called for reservations almost as soon as I wrote my request (he's awesome.) The boys each got to pick out their valentines from good old Wal-Mart and did a great job of addressing them (with minimal help...even Drew.)

With Jonathan in kindergarten this year the burden fell to us to create his valentine holder. Jonathan is obsessed with Legos. Knowing this, Chris got creative and before I knew it he and Jonathan were creating a Lego fortress . Jonathan wanted to piece together the smaller Legos but Chris quickly persuaded him to use the larger ones. Jonathan was so proud of their creation!

Poor Drew had to stick with what he created in pre-school. Bummer. At least he got to write his name on the front!

The boys didn't receive any chocolate or cards from us this year. Instead, we bought them super cool Iron Man costumes. They loved them for a few days and now the costumes are in a pile with the rest of the superhero costumes...
Much like all of their other toys...
Hence the reason we should not buy them anything else...
Ever...

Chris and the boys came to see me after school the Friday before Valentine's Day. It was awesome to get to introduce them to fellow teachers and administrators. They wrote me little notes on my board and enjoyed sitting in the desks and snooping around the shelves. When we went to the car they surprised me with a Koala named Eucalyptus from Build-a-Bear. Chris says that Eucalyptus has two hearts and cannot believe that she has survived as long as she has. Chris also said that the outfit cost as much as the bear. Go figure.

Eucalyptus currently resides beside my bed unless I actually MAKE the bed, at which point she sits on top of the bed. Yes, you just read an unfortunate but true fact about our life.

Actually what normally happens is that I end up making the bed right before I hop in so that the sheets aren't messed up. Hey, It makes sense in my mind and Chris doesn't complain (unless the sheets are messed up.)

OK, so back to the Friday afternoon before Valentine's Day. Because of Chris's schedule that day, he and the boys had not been home since Drew got out of preschool. I believed this fact could work to my advantage, given the potential of chocolate in their valentine stash. Unfortunately, neither boy could produce chocolate for me after school. NONE! Where is the love? They had plenty of cheap suckers and other gross candy but no chocolate. In my opinion, if you're going to give out something for Valentine's Day, make it awesome. Otherwise, leave it at home. Seriously, how many heart-shaped suckers can one family eat?

Next year I plan on shopping for valentines BEFORE the evening before the party at a place other than Wally World. I was so not impressed with the selection...but then again it was the day before...

The final topic of this blog is my Valentine's Day date. Andrea offered to let the boys spend the night at her house so that we could stay out as late as we wanted. Our dinner reservations were for five so we were finished with dinner relatively early. Instead of seeing a movie in a theater, we opted to head home and watch a movie there. Unfortunately, Chris and I were not on the same page regarding the movie selection. We ended up watching Arachnophobia. Nice. Nothing like seeing people die from spider bites to spark the romance in our marriage...
